CVS and a bit of Kroger

Yesterday, I realized an ECB was expiring that day, so I ran into CVS after hitting the post office. I grabbed:

2 Sure deodorants $5.38 minus 2 $1 coupons= $3.38
Bic Soleil razor $6.99 minus $4 coupon= $2.99
4 pk Soleil cartridges $6.99 minus $4 coupon= $2.99
Minus $10 ECB that was adjusted down to $9.36
Total out of pocket (tax) $.50
Got back $8 in ECBs and $1 ECB for my spring spending
I will also be sending in the Sure Buy One Get One Free rebate to get $2.69 back

The only coupon queen moment I had at Kroger this week was getting an 8 pack of DanActive for $1. It was clearanced down to $1.99 and I had a $1 coupon. Maybe next week will prove to be better for couponing.

Jake and I are going to walk to 7-11 after dinner to get our free slurpees. What a nice treat for a hot day!

Grocery store deals

Earlier this week, Jake and I stopped in at Kroger and Ukrops (a local grocery chain in and around the Richmond area) to pick up some sale items.

Our first stop was Ukrops. In addition to all the things on our list, we got some impromptu crackers and cheese. After we picked up our yogurt, we turned around and saw a Nabisco cracker display. They were on sale for $1.88 and there was a tearpad for $1 off 1 box of Nabisco crackers. $.88 for Nabisco crackers? Yes, please! We picked up two boxes and came across a peelie coupon on one of the boxes: buy two boxes of Nabisco crackers and get one block of Kraft cheese for free. Hot dang, free cheese too? We bolted over to the cheese section and picked up a block. All in all, we got:

2 boxes of Nabisco crackers $3.76 minus 2 $1 coupons= $1.76
9 bottles of Powerade (on sale for $.69 each)= $6.21 minus 9 $.75 coupons= overage of $.54
1 block of Kraft cheese $3.55 minus Nabisco coupon= FREE
12 cups of Yoplait yogurt (on sale for $.50 each) $6 minus 2 buy 6 get 1 free coupons= $5
2 cucumbers $1.76
1 4lb bag of red potatoes $2.48
2 lbs of zucchini and yellow squash $1.86
Total with tax: $12.96

Kroger was just as good:
3 packages of chum salmon (I’ve never heard of this type of salmon before, but it was super cheap and it turns out it tastes okay) $3.77
1 pouch of Starkist Tuna $1.69 minus free coupon= FREE
3 bottles of Lawry’s marinade $3 minus 3 $.50 coupons doubled to $1= FREE
1 roll of Bounty basic paper towels $1 minus $.25 coupon doubled to $.50= $.50
1 gallon of orange juice $3.79
1 container of sherbet (I was really jonesing for some rainbow sherbet that night) $1.69
2 cartons of Tropicana Coastal Groves lemonade (on clearance for $1.50 each) $3 minus $1 coupon= $2
1 jar of Hellmann’s mayo with canola oil $2.49 minus $.50 paper coupon doubled to $1 and $.40 ecoupon=$1.09
1 jar of Hellmann’s mayo with olive oil $2.49 minus $1 paper coupon minus $1 ecoupon= $.49
Total with tax: $13.86

Jake and I ran to two grocery stores when he got home from band practice tonight for a few things that were on sale. We kept running into deal after deal and wound up paying only $27 for 42 items. Included in the haul was 9 free bottles of Powerade, free Kraft cheese, free tuna fish, and 3 free bottles of Lawry’s marinade. More details to come on my customary Friday deal post!

A week full of deals
June 6, 2008, 8:34 pm
Filed under: CVS, Deals, Rite Aid

So, I didn’t get the job I was interviewed for two weeks ago. Instead of moping, I’m going to recount all the excellent deals I got this week.

First off, I got a free pair of Jockey’s Ultimates undies at Macy’s. I also got a free Krispy Kreme doughnut today.

I went to two bakery outlets (Pepperidge Farm and Wonder Bread) and got two loaves of bread, a box of crackers, a bag of mini bagels, and a box of frozen garlic bread for about $9.

CVS and Rite Aid proved to be pretty good, especially compared to the past couple of weeks.

At CVS, I got:
2 bags of Chex Mix for $2 minus 2 $1 coupons= FREE
2 bottles of Dawn dish soap $2 minus $.25 coupon = $1.75
1 two pack of Oral B toothbrushes $6.99
1 package of CVS Qtips $3.19
1 birthday card $2.29
Minus $10 ECB
Total with tax $4.49
I got $9.99 back in ECBs.

The first Rite Aid I went to was being closed down in a few days, so I left and went to my usual Rite Aid and got:
2 bottles of Head and Shoulders shampoo $8 minus B1G1F coupon that cashier rung up for full price of $5.49 instead of $4= $2.51
1 bottle Pantene Pro V Beautiful Lengths conditioner $3 minus $1.50 coupon= $1.50
Total with tax $4.16
I’ll be getting $5.50 back in rebates.

Now, if only getting a full time job were as easy as saving money…

No deals this week

Sometimes, the best way to save money is to not spend any at all.

I didn’t go to any drug stores this week because none of the deals really wowed me. Plus, we have a good supply of all the essentials right now, so I really didn’t want to buy yet another tube of toothpaste, even if it was free.

Jake and I didn’t get much at Kroger this week either; we only picked up a few small things. I threw away a bag of lettuce and two packages of pita bread a few days ago because they went bad before we could eat them. Throwing away food is a very obvious sign that we have enough food and there’s no reason to buy more when it will only wind up in the trash. I really wanted to try out a farmer’s market this week, but tossing that food made me think that maybe next week will be a better time.

So, sorry to disappoint, but I don’t have any spectacular deals to report this week. I am planning on picking up my free after rebate bottle of Wishbone Bountifuls before the 1st though.

A few small deals at Kroger and Walgreens

In addition to my success at Goodwill this week, I also managed to grab a few deals at Kroger and Walgreens.

Kroger:
Wisk detergent on sale for $3.49 minus $1.50 coupon from paper minus $1.50 electronic coupon= $.49
2 boxes of Tampax $6.10 minus $.50 coupon from paper doubled to $1 minus B1G1F electronic coupon= $2.05 (could have been even better if I had another $.50 coupon)

Walgreens:
I got a $5 off a $20 or more purchase coupon emailed to me that was only good on Friday. I’m quickly running out of contact solution, so I figured I’d get some so I could use the $5/$20 coupon (I wasn’t thrilled with anything else on sale/FAR this week).

Twin pack of Walgreens brand contact solution $9.49
Duracell rechargable batteries on sale for $10.99 minus $2 coupon= $8.99
Minus $5/$20
Minus $2 (the cashier rang up my battery coupon twice by accident)
Total= $12.25
I used my gift card, so nothing out of pocket.

Anyone else having a hard time finding deals lately? It’s like a wasteland out there.

A birthday full of deals

Sorry for not posting yesterday. As it was my birthday and all, I decided to give myself a little break from writing. Somehow Jake and I both managed to have the day off, so we took advantage of the opportunity to spend the whole day together. The only things on my agenda were to find a pair of black shoes for my job interview tomorrow and to have dinner with my dad at a local Indian restaurant.

Jake treated me to lunch and then we walked down the street to a Goodwill to look for shoes. On the way, we came across a promotional event for Scion in front on a local music store. Jake just happens to own a Scion, so we didn’t need to test drive one of their cars to get in on the offers. We took an eight question survey and both received a $15 gift certificate to the music store, a can of Rockstar (I gave mine to Jake because those things are gross), and a fistful of pens. $30 free bucks for CDs for a minute of our time? Hell yeah!

Once we actually got to the Goodwill, I made a bee line for the shoes. While I was perusing the selection, Jake sat down on a nearby sofa to ease the pain of waiting. As soon as he sat down, he called me away from the shoes. “Look at this sofa. Sit down.” I sat. It was one of the most comfortable sofas I’ve ever sat on. The cover wasn’t ugly and everything was in good shape. We looked at the tag- it was only $100. The metal frame of our futon as been slowly bending back to the point that it can only lay down flat. After listening to a string of “can we get it can we get it can we get it”s, we tried to pick it up to see how heavy it was. It was oddly heavy. We checked under the cushions- it was a sleeper. For $100! Sold! We went in for shoes and left with a sofa.

Once we managed to get ahold of/talk Jake’s brother into helping us haul the sofa home in his truck, we visited two more local thrift stores with no luck before he was able to come over to our part of town. We took a breather once the futon was taken apart and the sofa was carried up the stairs and then stopped by two more Goodwills before dinner. At the second Goodwill (and last thrift store that I could think of), I found my shoes. Or I should say, one of them. They were black, they were cute, they were my size, but I could only find the right shoe. I scoured the racks and couldn’t find its partner. I asked the cashier if there was any hope and she called a manager over to search for the shoe. About 5 minutes later, an employee came up with the complete pair. I about hugged the guy I was so happy. $8 and the shoes were mine.

Free gift certificates; a cheap, cozy sofa; a perfect pair of inexpensive shoes; and a yummy dinner culminated in a very happy and frugal 22nd birthday.

Back in the CVS game

I wasn’t going to go drug store shopping this week, that is until two CVS deals were pointed out to me: Smart Start cereal and Hawaiian Tropic sun care.

The cereal was on sale for 2 for $5 and there’s a $3 off 2 printable coupon available at smartsource.com, making it a dollar a box. We’ve been in need of some cereal for quite a few weeks so I figured I should jump on it.

At first the Hawaiian Tropic sun care ECB deal didn’t seem very appealing: buy 2 products and get $10 back in ECBs. Well, one bottle costs at least $10 and I don’t need any sunscreen. Then I found out that Hawaiian Tropic makes lip balm for $1.99 and the lip balm is included in the sale. I searched high and low around the sun care section, seasonal section, and lip balm section without any luck. On a whim, I scanned the clearance section. Two little hangers were full of these lip balms for $.99. I grabbed two that didn’t have the clearance stickers covering up the UPC and prayed to the coupon gods while I was being rung up. As I figured, they rang up full price, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to press my luck. While the cashier was bagging them, he noticed the clearance tags on the front of the packages and adjusted the price down without so much as a peep from me. So, I bought two lip balms for $2 and got $10 back in ECBs. I’ll also be getting another $10 next week for participating in the latest CVS Advisor Panel survey.

I think you can say that, with $20 EBCs in tow, I’m officially back in the CVS game.

This week’s trip to Rite Aid and CVS

Filed under: CVS, Deals, Rite Aid

Once again I’m going to skip taking a picture since I didn’t get too much and I already put everything away. Hopefully next week will prove to be more photogenic.

I dropped by Rite Aid earlier this week to get two items that had rebates that were only good until Tuesday. I really love Citre Shine products, so even though I didn’t have any coupons, I didn’t want to pass this one up!

Citre Shine conditioner $3.99
Charles Worthington Big Waves shampoo $4.99
Total with tax $9.43
I’ll be getting $8.98 pack in Single Check Rebates

As I posted about a few days ago, CVS had some Burt’s Bees products half price so I scooped up a whole bunch to give as gifts. We were also in need of some laundry detergent so I took advantage of the All BOGO.

2 bottles of All detergent $6.49 minus one $1.50 coupon and one $1 coupon= $3.99
2 Mother’s Day cards $5.48
Burt’s Bees baby soap $2.49
Burt’s Bees baby lotion $4.49
Burt’s Bees diaper ointment $3.74
Burt’s Bees hand care kit $6.49
Burt’s Bees trial sized kit $7.49
Minus $3.50 in ECBs and $1 CRT
Total with tax $31.28
I didn’t get any ECBs back nor do I have any left so I’ll be starting fresh this weekend.

CVS emailed me a $4/$20 that’s only good until Sunday so I plan to head out and get the monthly ECB deals for May before then.
